Day 2: Munich / Freising / Altotting

Upon our arrival at Munich Airport we are greeted by our tour escort and board our deluxe motor coach to start our sightseeing tour. Our fi rst stop today will be Freising, where Pope Benedict XVI studied at the University of Theology and was ordained on June 29th 1951 at St. Mary's Cathedral. From here, we drive to Altotting for dinner and overnight. (D)

Day 3: Altotting / Marktl / Neuotting

After breakfast, our sightseeing tour begins in the town of Altotting, referred to as the “Heart of Bavaria,” with Germany's most famous Marian Shrine dating back over 500 years. Each year over a million pilgrims visit the Alotting shrine to venerate the “Black Madonna,” a wooden statue of the Virgin Mary, and to pray for healing. The shrine displays many crutches as a testimony to successful healings and answered prayers. We continue to the Baroque Chapel Square to pray at the tiny Chapel of Grace dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. We will visit St. Konrad Monastery where the saints' relics are housed under the altar in St. Anna Basilica, the largest church built in Germany in the 20th century. We end our tour with a visit to the monumental cyclorama, “Jerusalem Panorama Crucifi xion of Christ” circa 1903, showing the crucifi xion scene on canvass paintings. This afternoon we drive to the market town of Marktl, the birthplace of Pope Benedict XVI. We will visit the church where he was born and baptized on Easter Saturday April 16th, 1927. We return to Alotting via Neuotting, a town on the river Inn, for dinner and overnight. (B,D)

Day 4: Prien

Today we journey to lovely Prien at Lake Chiemsee where we will visit the Island of Fraueninsel, including the Cloister Church destroyed and rebuilt many times by King Ludwig I. Continue to Herrenchiemsee Island, the largest island in the “Bavarian Sea,” famed for the palace built by Bavaria's legendary King Ludwig II. The royal palace, fountains and palace grounds were modeled after Versailles. Leisure time this afternoon to explore on our own. Dinner and overnight. (B,D)

Day 5: Munich

After breakfast we depart for Munich. En route, we will stop in the town of Wieskirche to visit the Pilgrimage Church of Wies, located in the foothills of the Alps and added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983.
