Fatima, Lourdes and Spain

Itinerary

Day 1 - New York

Depart New York area gateway for your overnight flight to Lisbon, Portugal. Dinner and breakfast are served aboard the flight.

Day 2 - Fatima

Arriving in Lisbon, enjoy a brief panoramic tour of the charming Portuguese capital. See the iconic Belem Tower, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Jerónimos Monastery, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the Monument to the Discoveries and (time permitting) the Basilica of St. Anthony. Continue to Fatima with a stop in Santarem to take in the Miracle of the Bleeding Host. This evening, take part in the moving Candlelight Rosary Procession (if available). The ceremony begins in the Chapel of the Apparitions (Capelinha). Overnight in Fatima. (D)

Day 3 - Fatima

Visit the Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima, starting at the pristine Basilica, with the tombs of Jacinta and Francisco, beatified in 2000, and Sr. Lucia. Continue to the Capelinha, where Our Lady appeared to the shepherd children. Light a candle near the shrine, walk the lovely grounds or shop for religious articles nearby. After dinner you can once again experience the Rosary Candlelight Procession, if it is available. Overnight in Fatima. (B, D)

Day 4 - Fatima

This morning discover the hamlet of Aljustrel, the shepherd children's home. Continue to Valinhos, where Our Lady appeared after the children's release from prison. Visit the church where they were baptized and the local cemetery. Take some time for private devotions before watching a video presentation on the history of Fatima. Later participate in the Rosary and the Candlelight Procession, if it is available. Overnight in Fatima. (B, D)

Day 5 - Burgos

Depart Fatima after breakfast and take in the rustic beauty of the Portuguese countryside before crossing the border into Spain. After arriving in the city of Burgos, which was founded in the 9th century, you'll enjoy an orientation tour. Highlights include a visit to the imposing Gothic Basilica, one of Spain's largest and most beautiful churches. Dinner and overnight in Burgos. (B, D)

Day 6 - Lourdes

Depart Burgos after breakfast, enjoying the scenic ride through the rugged Pyrenees Mountains on the way to France. You'll arrive in the afternoon and visit the beloved Shrine of Lourdes, where in 1858 Our Lady appeared to the 14-year-old Bernadette Soubirous calling herself the “Immaculate Conception.” Once again, you are invited to take part in the evening Candlelight Procession and International Rosary, if available. Dinner and overnight in Lourdes. (B, D)

Day 7 - Lourdes

We continue learning about the life of St. Bernadette in the small village of Bartrès, where she spent part of her childhood working as a shepherdess. Return to Lourdes with time for personal devotions including the Eucharistic Devotion and Procession. Tonight, you are again invited to participate in Rosary Candlelight Procession, if available. (B, D)

Day 8 - Zaragoza

After breakfast, depart Lourdes for Zaragoza, once the seat of the ancient kingdom of Aragon and today a vibrant university town. In Zaragoza, you will visit one of the world's largest Marian Shrines, the Basilica-Cathedral of Our Lady of the Pillar. The name Our Lady of the Pillar was given to the Blessed Virgin Mary because of her miraculous appearance in Zaragoza. The church is said to be the first ever dedicated to Mary. You will have time this afternoon to discover the town's many charms on your own. Dinner and overnight in Zaragoza. (B, D)

Day 9 - Madrid

Depart Zaragoza en route to Madrid after breakfast. After checking into your hotel, take a panoramic city tour of this cosmopolitan Spanish capital. From your motorcoach, enjoy views of many historic sites including The Prado, the famed museum that is home to almost 7,000 works of art and the 2,000-room Royal Palace, dating from the 1700's. Dinner and overnight in Madrid. (B, D)

Day 10 - Madrid

Today you are free to discover Madrid on your own. Explore some of the many museums, visit chic shops or choose an optional excursion to Avila, a medieval walled city that was the home of St. Teresa (available at additional cost) . It was in this ancient town, today a national monument, that Teresa was born in 1515. Delve into the world of this inspiring saint and mystic, as you visit the places that speak of her life, struggles and calling. Later we return to Madrid for some leisure time. Dinner and overnight in Madrid. (B, D)

Day 11 - New York

Depart for Madrid's airport after breakfast for your flight home. (B)
